So you have decided to learn the piano/keyboard but not sure whether you want to go to a music teacher yet. This is a dilemma which most of us face as beginners and it is understandable to an extent. Before committing money/efforts on books and teachers it is good to get an idea of what is involved in learning the piano. It will in fact help you later when you decide to go to a teacher since you would have an understanding of the various topics that you would be supposed to learn.

Black & white Keys

Finding basic information is not a problem at all as there is so much stuff floating around on the internet that you should be able to start on your own initially. The most obvious topic to start with will be to know the notes on a Piano. It is very important to know how the various keys on the piano are named, since there are so many of them. Besides, there are white as well as black keys so you need to learn how to differentiate them.

Names of the Notes?

The thing is though it looks daunting, there is basically a pattern to it. Basically there are only seven Notes - C D E F G A B. This same set then gets repeated throughout the keyboard from left to the right. All the white keys are named this way. And what about the Black keys? Those are derived from the white key, you need to add a "Sharp" or a "Flat" to the name of the white key.

C D E F G A B (Basic Notes)

Read Music

Once you know the names of the notes on the piano, you will also need to learn how to recognize them on written music. The keyboard of a piano is basically depicted on written music by using Clefs - basically the Treble clef and the Bass clef. The various notes of the song are then depicted on the sheet music which you will need to recognize and play on the piano.

Wouldn't it be nice to just be able to take a pill and suddenly wake up one morning and find that you can play guitar like Eric Clapton? Films like Matrix featured this concept, but Hollywood is Hollywood and real life, as everyone knows, is quite different.

Although this magic pill does not exist when it comes to learning to play the guitar, one thing is certainly true: If the lessons you have chosen are not well structured and laid out, your learning curve will be more of a straight horizontal line, gently inclined upwards.

When I was young, I earnestly wanted to learn to play the guitar, but we were five children in my family so money was quite scarce, and I had to learn 'the hard way'. This trial & error method worked, as I now realize that I was quite musically inclined and very set on my goal, but I ended up spending a lot of time needlessly. What I learned in my first five years of consistent 6 hour daily sessions, could easily have been learned with a proper method and teacher in less than 6 months ...and spending just an hour a day on the instrument!

I can tell you first hand that there is a big difference between learning the right way and the wrong way. Experienced teachers and good methods will make you progress like you've never dreamed possible. And if your problem is money there's a very good alternative to hiring a private teacher: Online guitar lessons.

For less than $100 you can get quality lessons with videos, backing tracks, TAB plus musical notation and software bonuses to boot! Sure, you can find free lessons all over the web, but having the information is no guarantee you'll know how to use it effectively to learn quickly.

As a beginner guitarist, you need someone to tell you what goes first and what follows in a step-by-step manner. Yours is the goal you wish to achieve, but it's up to a well structured course to get you there.

While the tuning fork may not really be considered an instrument, it is a great help in keeping instruments in tune. This simple tuning tool has been around for a fairly long time and has been used to tune just about any kind of instrument. It is an acoustic resonator that will vibrate at a particular pitch. This pitch is what musicians will compare with a note on their instrument to test whether the instrument is in tune or not. The tuning fork has earned its name from its shape, as it is a metal bar that divides into a u-shape; it is this shape that allows the vibrations to be heard after the instrument is struck against something.

Tuning forks come in many different sizes. The different sizes or the different lengths of the prongs will create a unique pitch. Larger tuning forks will emit a lower pitch while the smaller tuning forks will emit a higher pitch. First invented in 1711 by John Shore, it is one of the typical ways that a person can keep their instrument in tune, though electronic tuners are preferred by many people today.

People who are not familiar with the use of tuning forks may find that when striking a tuning fork against something, they will find that they may not have an easy time hearing the sound. Those familiar with tuning forks are well aware that to hear the pitch, the tuning fork will sometimes have to be pressed against a surface, like a table top, in order to amplify the sound so that the person can hear it well enough to make a comparison.

One might say that a drawback of the tuning fork is that one size will only make one pitch, meaning that they would have to purchase a number of tuning forks in order to make different pitches. While purchasing a single tuning fork is usually enough for an experienced musician, some may prefer to have more than one for a number of reasons. Tuning forks can be expensive, but there is the chance that one might be able to find an older one from a store that sells instruments.

In the end, however, it is probably best to purchase them new. If purchasing a tuning fork new is not an option, then one can look at purchasing an electronic tuner. One might think that these can be fairly expensive, but the truth is that they are relatively inexpensive and can be adjusted to show when different pitches are hit. In fact, electronic tuners are becoming more popular all the time because they are easy to use and one doesn't have to rely as much on one's ear in order to calculate whether one has hit the right note or note.

Many musicians, however, will prefer that non-electronic ways to tune the instrument are used because it teaches the musician to become familiar with what sounds right and what does not. Electronic tuners take away from this and tempt the musician to rely too much on it in order to get the right notes.

One word describes the CD Welcome from Santana... AWESOME!

I wish it werent the case but, its not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just cant force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Welcome. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and youve got one of Santanas most impressive releases ever.

Overall Welcome is an outstanding release. Quite possibly Santana's best to date. Really spectacular from beginning to end. If you're even mildly into Rock music you'll enjoy this CD.

While the entire CD is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 2 - Love, Devotion And Surrender, track 4 - When I Look Into Your Eyes, and track 10 - Mantra.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - Going Home. This is a great track!

You got an iPod! It's a great gadget, and you really like the smooth interface, the high-quality sound, the amount of storage you've got for your files, and the way you can keep pictures and documents on it. Hey--you did know that, right? You can open your iPod on your laptop just like a CD or a flash drive, and drag your other files right onto it.

There are so many things you can do with an iPod, but you will need to get accessories for some things. If you do an Internet search for "iPod accessories" you will find millions of choices, making it really tough to just find the good things. For example, narrowing down to iPod add ons and replacement parts that are compatible with your specific hardware is almost impossible when you do such a broad search. If you want to narrow in on what will work for you, search for the model name and generation of your iPod when you start looking for accessories.

What can be purchased? Only certain parts are truly replaceable, the battery, the screen and the headphones. You will only care to replace the battery or the screen (during the warranty period be sure to send the iPod to the maker for adjustments or repairs) on these. The quality of your iPod can be greatly enhanced by buying new headphones, especially if you are careful to pay at least a modest sum (not too cheap). But, be cautious about sites that promise mystical capabilities of their sound equipment.

There are many kinds of iPod accessories available. These include arm ban holders that you can wear during workouts, protective skins made from silicon rubber or leather, and nearly-invisible plastic films that protect the device from scratches. For years companies have offered speaker docking stations, allowing iPod owners to turn their device into a stereo system. Even car companies are following this trend, creating cars that include connections designed just for the iPod.

There are also plenty of choices of electronic add ons, whether you want to track your mileage during your daily run or use a DJ mixing table. One notable gap in the variety of products on offer--no GPS receiver! You can surprisingly often find the best stuff on the manufacturer's website, although it's always a good idea to do some price comparison before you purchase, as you might even find something better.

If you really want to immerse yourself in a strange world of electronic culture, search for "iPod hacking." You'll learn weird stuff like how to replace the basic operating system of the iPod with something more geek friendly, and how to replace parts of the innards to make dramatic changes in sound quality. It's not for everyone, and it's all guaranteed to void your warrantee. Have fun, but be careful.

How To Tune A Guitar By Ear In 7 Easy Steps

Learning how to tune a guitar by ear takes practice to perfect but once you have mastered this skill you'll be glad you did.

Guitar tuners are easier to use and a necessity when you are in loud environments where you cant hear very well such as bars. Tuning your guitar by ear will come in handy when you have a guitar but no electronic tuner around.

Besides, if you are playing songs around the campfire, your friends won't want to see you stop and pull out your guitar tuner every time it goes out of tune.

So this is how you can tune your guitar, in standard tuning, by ear!

e|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|--

B|-----|-----|-----|-----|--x--|-----|--

G|-----|-----|-----|--x--|-----|-----|--

D|-----|-----|-----|-----|--x--|-----|--

A|-----|-----|-----|-----|--x--|-----|--

E|-----|-----|-----|-----|--x--|-----|--

1 2 3 4 5 6

It's good to practice trying to tune the A string without any tools to help you. But until you can identify exactly how it is supposed to sound, you can use an A 440 tuning fork.

1. Gently tap the side of the tuning fork on your knee and place the stem of the fork on your guitar. You should now hear the tuning forks "A" tone resonating through the body of your guitar.

2. Now pluck your A (5th) string. Does it sound like your tuning fork? If it does, then perfect, you are ready for the next string. If not, turn the tuning peg down if the note is sharp and up if the note is flat. Once this string sounds like the tone from the tuning fork, you are ready to tune your other strings to this "in tune" A (5th) string.

3. Your next step is to press your finger on the 5th fret on the low E (6th) string and pick it. Now pick the open A (5th) string and compare the two tones. If they sound the same, then your string is in tune. If not, turn the E string tuning peg down if the note is sharp or up if the note is flat.

4. Repeat the last step but this time placing your finger on the 5th fret on the A (5th) string and picking the open D (4th) string. Tune the D string up or down until the two strings sound the same.

5. Now lets repeat these steps on the 5th fret on the D (4th) string and pick the open G (3rd) string. Tune the G string up or down until these strings sound the same.

For the next step you will have to do something a little different.

6. Press your finger on the 4th fret on the G (3rd) string and not the 5th fret this time. Now pick the G (3rd) string and then pick the open B (2nd) string. Tune the B string until they sound the same.

7. Next you will put your finger on the 5th fret of the B (2nd) string and pick this string and the high E (1st) string. Tune the high E string up or down until they sound the same.

Well, there you go. Now you know how to tune a guitar by ear!

Team Method Guitar Learning

A new amazing method of guitar courses online is now available for everyone to take his/her guitar playing to a new level.

You have probably tried numerous courses but yet you couldn't reach that last step. There was something that they couldn't tell you or maybe there is something about learning playing guitar that they even know themselves.

Ben Edwards has been playing guitar for 15 years and has even toured internationally with his band DegreesK. And for the last four years he has thought people to play guitar online. His idea of online lessons is that one teacher doesn't have all the answers so he made a list of the different skills he was good at and asked his pupils what they wanted to learn. Then he gathered a team of talented guitar experts to teach you every one of their skills. Whatever you want to play their team of guitar experts will help you discover your own guitar hero within yourself.

This is a completely new concept of teaching and is therefore called Team Method Guitar Learning. You learn from a team of guitar professionals who are experts in acoustic guitar, electric guitar, lead guitar, fingerpicking, beginner's techniques, advanced techniques and specialty areas like learning to play by ear.

Quotes by pupils:

Hi Ben, I just wanted to thank for that amazing product. You have no idea how much cash you saved me on guitar lessons! I love this kit! It is the best self learned kit I ever had.... I can't wait for your next product. -- Asher

I started playing and it's absolutely just a fantastic product. Biggest asset of it is the video. When you first start playing the guitar sometimes it's just hard to look at paper and start playing without actually either hearing it, or even seeing it. - Mark

When I first started playing, I was stuck. I didn't know what to do, or where to go from there. As soon as I got Team Method Guitar Learning, my guitar playing improved greatly! I actually enjoyed practicing. Thank you for this wonderful product! - Michelle

This is fantastic! I have really seen my playing take off. And I use the metronome and GuitearIt more and more each day. I can't imagine a better product for a novice or beginning guitarist. Keep up the great work! - Stephen Yost

How To Produce A Great Drum And Bass Track

From its humble beginnings on the london rave scene in the early 90's, when breaks were innocently looped instead of sequenced, and vocals pitched up instead of timestrecthed, to the present day, it has always been at the cutting edge of electronic musical innovation. Much of the scene's early output was characterised by a total disregard for the conventions, techniques and rules of the day (largely because none of the producers knew what they were), while todays producers are among the most skilled, meticulous and innovative there are. But the common thread is a determination to rinse it, and rinse it in even more ingenious ways.As the production bar in drum 'n' bass has been rased on an almost seasonal basis, it's taken the learning curve with it. Even producers who don't like the genre will often sit and marvel at the complexity and density of modern DnB productions. Also drum 'n' bass has a distinct sound, and it places emphasis on different areas of the mix to other genres, so that even producers in other types of electronic music can struggle to achieve that DnB vibe.

20 MUST KNOW DRUM 'n' BASS TIPS

1- Layering chopped up break beats (DRUM LOOPS) is a good way to get that authentic DnB sound. For a tight, modern sound, put each hits end point before the next drum sound occurs: simply leaving the end point at the end of the sample makes it easier to program junglistic beats, but you'll either have to tune or time stretch it to make sure it plays at the correct tempo.

2- One of the main advantages of using really tightly chopped beats is that you can easily pitch bend your drum part up and down without it ever going out of time. This technique can be used to create stunning percussive effects. For the best results try combining this method withother forms of processing such as filtering or degrading effects.

3- If your track's switch lacks bite, try using a different break beat or rythm pattern to keep the crowd on their toes, processing such as pitch shifting or flanging can do miracles here.

4-When using heavy compression on your rythm track for that fat break beat sound, you may find that your beat gets overpowered when a big kick drum sound is triggered. Consider putting any such sound on a seperate channel with its own compression. If your kick drum needs enhancing, try beefing it up with a layered TR-909 kick drum sample, but resist the urge to turn it up too loud, make sure the sub bass and beat still have enough room to breath.

5-By using a variety of layered re-programmed breakbeats, you can quickly build up a complex rythm track. The trick is to make it sound like one cohesive part that develops and builds, rather than several different parts all fighting for space. The golden rule is to accurately program your drums in the first place, although additional EQing of flabby kick drums, cymbals and hihats may help reign in errant beats.

6- For those liquid funk moments, a housey organ bass always sounds great. You can make your own using sine, pulse or triangle waves low-pass filtered until you get just a few harmonics poking through. Try detuning one oscillator up seven semitones for a handy fifth that will bring back some old school memories.

7- These days it seems everyone is rockin the saw wave lead. This sound is easy to create - short attack and release envelope, a little chorus or pitch modulation on the saw wave and your there. Things can be made more interesting with a little degrading effect, and a bit of glide can add an interesting twist to your nasty lead noise.

8- For artificial intelligence style warbling synth lines, an LFO tied to the filter cutoff is your best bet. Make sure the LFO's phase is synced to the start of the note and try a variety of rates and phase positions until you come up with a suitable noise. Experiment using different wave shapes, LFO amounts and filter cutoff settings, and try further developing the sound with a little LFO based pulse modulation.

9- When using 'real' instrument samples or presets, it's important that they sit comfortably alongside your more processed sounds. If possible, create reverb and delay send effects so you can place all your sounds in the same virtual space. Along with good playing or sequencing, reverb can disguise synthesized reverb sounds. For an even more pronounced effect, try applying a reverb pre-fader soundscape style effects.

10- Make more sophisticated arpeggiator leads by applying frequency or pulse width modulation envelopes to the sound and varying the decaytime. High-pass work well with this style of sound. When filter sweeping the sound in or out, try automating another synth setting, such as one of the envelopes decay time or filter envelope amount. For a trancey sound, delay is a must, but don't make it too extreme or you may mask any chord changes.

11- Now days, most virtual analogue synths feature a massive amount of wave shapes for you to experiment with. Instead of using a sine wave, try a variety of different wave shapes and low-pass filter them to remove all but the lowest frequencies. This will give you a sub bass with more interest than a standard sine tone, which can be enhanced further with tube amplification and other effects.

12- A proper sub bass is all important when creating DnB tracks. In order to create the desired wall of sound effect, the bassline has to hit the low end of the frequency spectrum. The easiest way to create a sub bass is to use a sine wave with a very short attack time and quick release. Try using this sound to double the lead part, thereby adding beef, but remember to watch the levels, as you can have too much of a good thing.

13- Another classic DnB sound is that of the 'Reece' bassline, as used in Renegade Feat Ray keith's Terrorist. While it's unlikely you'll get in trouble for sampling this much loved tone, you can create your own version by layering up detuned square waves with a touch of low pass filtering. This can then be resampled and further processed to create your own fearsome basslines.

14- Another good way to keep the energy levels up on a switch is to introduce a kick drum roll underneath the main beat.

15- To create the familiar wah-bass effect you'll need a synth with a an oscillator set to a wave shape with at least a few harmonics (ie, not a sine or triange), filtered with a low pass filter. An LFO or, alternatively, a short attack and decay envelope, can control the cutoff of the filter. When using an envelope, the note must be retriggered quickly to create the undulating bass riff.

16- Variation can be added to wah-bass riffs by modulating the LFO speed or envelope amount via key-following, eg, the higher the note played on the keyboard, the quicker the LFO oscillates or the more envelope is applied to the filter cutoff. Try varying amounts of one or both of these techniques to create progressively more twisted bass flutters.

17- When adding overdrive effects to filters, try out the different distortion types available and experiment with varying amounts of your chosen effect. Using vast amounts of overdrive may sound menacing, but in the context of a track, less is often more. Try starting out with a small amount of distortion and increase the levels slowly until you reach the optimum settings for your sound. The key is experimentation!

18- Another parameter that requires judicious tweaking when creating distorted bass noises is resonance. While it's very tempting to crank everything up to the most ear bending levels, try to stick to subtler settings- the highest db filter won't necessarily sound the best. Experiment with a combination of filter types and resonance settings until you get just enough harshness to offset the, rumbling bass end.

19- If your using an LFO to create your wah-bass, there are a couple of options available to you. Syncing the LFO to the track is a convenient way of getting it to play in time, but you may find the flexibility of the LFO rate control is worth making use of instead. Try any alternative phase and shape settings to create a variety of sounds.

20- Try using your synth or samplers pitch envelope to automatically bend notes downward. Experiment with different attack, decay and level values, and additional LFO pitch modulation, to create some unusual effects. If your instrument is capable of it, try applying different pitch modulation settings to each voice for yet more twisted bass.
